The Chapel
With an old carpenter's bench for an alter, the Chapel was both comforting and powerful. The Chapel was converted from a disused loft and like everything else in Talbot House, it was far from conventional. Worshippers had to sit round the edges of the room due to an unsafe floor and most of the furniture in the Chapel was donated by soldiers who came to services there. There was a miniature china font in which Tubby used for baptisms and music was provided by an old harmonium (known as ‘The Groanbox’) smuggled from home in one soldier's kit bag. More than 800 soldiers were confirmed and 25,000 took communion here, finding hope and comfort in that Upper Room.
