The Four Points

The earliest statement of the aims of Toc H was drawn up by Tubby Clayton, the Rev 'Dick' Sheppard of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Alexander (later Sir Alexander) Patterson early in 1920. It was revised in 1936 and again in 1967, to read as follows:

1. FRIENDSHIP: To love widely

To encourage members and staff to welcome all in friendship and thereby develop a spirit of understanding and reconciliation within the whole of Toc H as an international movement.

2. SERVICE: To build bravely

To encourage the study and debate of local and international events and their impact on individuals and communities. To promote the values of simples acts of kindness in transforming relationships.

3. FAIRMINDEDNESS: To think fairly.

To encourage mutual respect by actively sharing experience and knowledge with other people through listening, finding their own convictions and reducing the danger of conflict by mutually respectful dialogue and discussion.

4. TO WITNESS HUMBLY:

To seek a better world by exploring the potential of human and spiritual values as expressed through the world faiths and to promote active citizenship and spiritual health.
